We are delighted to announce that our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Waterplay Project has been declared the Best Play Initiative 2013 at the national Nancy Ovens Awards for Play.

Media personality Grant Stott presented the Outstanding Contribution to Play award on Saturday 7 September, which was collected by Senior Play Development Officer Margaret Westwood and project consultant Theresa Casey on behalf of all the establishments, children, staff, parents and community members who have been involved in the builds.

This was the 10th year of the annual Nancy Ovens Awards for Play, which looks at play areas and play projects promoting outdoor play across Scotland. Senior Education Manager Aileen McLean nominated the OPAL Waterplay project for an award and a detailed application was submitted in June.

Representatives from the Trust visited the short listed nominations from Caithness to the Borders over the summer, including example Waterplay projects at Moffat and Granton Early Years Centres. On the day there was a display of photographs from all the projects, along with the lovely Waterplay album kindly loaned by Hope Cottage Nursery which attracted many admiring comments!

The judges said they had been particularly impressed by: the way a small investment had such a large reward; how the local authority had engaged community help; the positive comments they had received from staff on the changes observed in children’s play; and how the project had stimulated other changes in the landscape for play in Early Years settings.

The Waterplay project will be showcased at Success in the City at The Faith Mission on Monday 21 October. The Nancy Ovens Award is actually an impressive bronze plaque designed to be mounted on a play area fence or wall. Unfortunately not every setting can have a plaque, but all early years settings who have kept a record of their process, build and play created by their project are invited to be part of the Waterplay display at Success in the City.

Delegates will be able to vote for their favourite project, and the setting judged best will receive the plaque to display in their play space. All the Early Years settings which have been part of the OPAL Waterplay project will receive a printed copy of the Nancy Ovens Award for Play certificate. To arrange for your project album to be included in the display, please contact margaret.westwood@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Children and Families Achievement Awards

The OPAL Waterplay project has also been nominated for the Children and Families Achievement Awards by Senior Education Manager Aileen McLean. The results will be announced on 27 November 2013. Watch this space!
